“The things I have lived through, I wouldn’t wish upon anyone, but I am a walking testimony that you can come out of it.”

David joined the Army at seventeen years old and served for 10 years. While serving in Iraq, David was shot in the head from an angle that caused the bullet to go around his skull and exit his jaw. He spent the next 15 months in the hospital recovering from his physical injuries and was subsequently medically retired from the Army.

David’s journey of healing continued through countless drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs as he struggled to heal the emotional wounds. When he left treatment, his family would not allow him to move back home and he found himself with no place to go. Defenders of Freedom met him at the airport, helped him with housing and provided the support he needed to get back on his feet.

The relationship between David and Defenders of Freedom has developed into a great partnership with www.veteransextremeadventures.com, a Non-Profit organization David helped found that works diligently to help struggling Veterans. VXA takes Veterans on outdoor hunting and fishing trips that help them bond with other Veterans. David’s healing journey took place over a few years but he hung in there and worked through his challenges so he is now able to help other Veterans.
